CHELAN FALLS, WA,  Aug 31st – A semi-tractor truck carrying a load of apples crashed on the Beebe Bridge in Chelan Falls, Washington just after 5pm Monday, August 31. The truck cab plunged into the Columbia River after the accident and the driver is missing.  Divers searched the river looking for the driver and any occupants who may have been in the cab at the time.

The accident occurred about a quarter of the way across the bridge, where the truck driver took a hard left turn and slammed through a vertical support girder, separating the girder from the bridge and spilling the load of apples onto the bridge deck. Washington State Patrol Trooper, Dave Phelps remarked on the accident, stating, “For some reason, the driver took a hard left turn through the railing.”

The tractor-trailer rig was traveling southbound on Highway 97 with a load of red delicious apples when the accident occured on the bridge. The cab broke through the railing, separated from the trailer, and plunged into the river. Divers located the submerged cab and used a boat and flotation booms to contain leaking diesel fuel. They also recovered some personal items, but no identification was found.

The bridge will remain closed until it is inspected and cleared for structural safety by the state Department of Transportation.
