UPS Semi Truck Crash Blocks Portion of Route 2 in Huntington WV

HUNTINGTON, WV – A UPS semi truck has crashed and blocked a portion of Route 2 in Huntington, West Virginia according to Cabell County 911 dispatchers as reported to WSAZ News Channel.

The accident occurred on Tuesday, Nov 1, at about 5:50 a.m. in the 5300-block of Ohio River Road. The WSAZ crew on the scene said that the UPS semi truck went off the road and ended up on the railroad tracks.

WSAZ.com reports:

The driver is reported to be okay.

A wrecker was brought in to remove the semi from the railroad track.

No word yet on whether the early morning fog was a factor.

Emergency crews are alternating traffic through the crash scene. They say drivers should expect delays in the area for several hours.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.

Semi Truck With Double Trailer Overturns on I-85 in Braselton, GA

BRASELTON, GA – A semi truck pulling two trailers overturned on the southbound I-85 in Braselton, GA in Gwinnett County, Georgia just past the Barrow County line on September 18, 2011.

The semi-truck was pulling two trailers and one of the trailers contained hazardous material.Braselton is located in four Georgia counties: Barrow, Gwinnett, Hall, and Jackson Counties. It is about 22 miles northeast of Lawrenceville and about 49 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The tractor-trailer accident occurred around 4:15 a.m. in the morning in the southbound lanes shortly past the Highway 211 exit. The tandem hauler swerved into the center of the road, jacknifed and then turned over and landed on its side in a ditch after taking out a section of guard rail.

The truck was carrying a drum with a hazardous chemical and so a Hazmat team was called in to deal with the situation. The material was identified as ethyl acetate, a flammable liquid.

Firefighters did not know the condition of the container that was holding the flammable liquid because the vehicle was overturned and on its side. They decided to take precautions and use multiple wreckers to carefully pull the truck and its two trailers into an upright position so the container could be inspected.

No cars were allowed to pass by the truck until it was determined that it was safe so the southbound lanes of I-85 near the Gwinnett and Barrow County line had to be shut down for several hours. As it turned out the container did not leak and there was no spillage of any hazardous material.

The semi truck driver received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the mishap and there were no other injuries.

Authorities do not know the cause of the accident and it remains under investigation.

Motorcyclist Killed by 18 Wheeler on Georgia I-85

SUWANEE, GA – A deadly accident involving a motorcyclist and 18 wheeler was the result of an airborne tire tread the motorcyclist hit while traveling on the northbound I-85 causing him to lose control and ending up in the pathway of an oncoming semi truck, according to Gwinnett County police.

The victim, identified as Lonnie Cross, 35, was riding his motorcycle Wednesday, Sept 14, at about 5:30 p.m. in the left lane of northbound I-85 at the I-985 split when he hit the tire tread after it had been struck by another vehicle.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

Cross lost control of his motorcycle, and after laying the motorcycle down on the roadway, he ended up resting in the center lane in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, police say. The driver of the truck could not avoid running over Cross, police say.

Cross died at Gwinnett Medical Center. Police say no charges were pending.

For some time, all lanes of I-85 were closed in the area, with traffic being re-routed to I-985.

In recent months at least a half dozen motorcyclists have been involved in fatal crashes on metro Atlanta highways.

Four Killed in Arizona Semi Truck Accident on I-10 Near Picacho Peak

ELOY, AZ – Four people were killed Thursday morning, Aug 8, when a semi truck crossed the median on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak and crashed into a minivan, shutting down the westbound lanes for almost 7 hours.

Authorities said that the minivan exploded into flames, killing all three people inside.

The truck driver, carrying produce for Sierra Transportation, was heading east at about 7:00 a.m. when he lost control of his 18 wheeler and crossed over the median.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that the accident left one person in critical condition and two others severely injured.

AZ Central.com reports:

The semi crossed the dirt median into the oncoming westbound lanes and slammed into the minivan. The minivan exploded into flames, killing all three people inside, officials said.

A Swift Transportation truck traveling west then collided with the Sierra truck, which had rolled over, leaving the trailer blocking both lanes.

The Swift semi truck’s driver was in critical condition and transferred to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment. The Sierra semi truck’s driver that crossed the median died in the wreck, authorities said. The co-driver of the Sierra truck and the driver of a two-door Honda sedan, also involved in the collision, were transported to the University Medical Center in Tuscon.

It is not yet known where both trucks were coming from. A spokesman for Phoenix-based Swift Transportation declined to comment.

DPS was uncertain of who was in the minivan and where it was headed.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.

MARTINEZ, CA – A 34-year old man identified as Klayton Dasilva of Concord California died on Wednesday, Aug 31, in a truck accident when he became pinned between the hydraulic bed and chassis of a dump truck.

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Office and California Highway Patrol said the accident occurred just after 10 a.m. at a work site in the 4600 block of Pacheco Boulevard in unincorporated Martinez.

State investigators are probing the death of a Concord man in a dump-truck accident Wednesday, authorities said.

Sheriff’s spokesman Jimmy Lee said detectives determined there was no criminal aspect to the accident, and that investigators from the California Department of Occupational Safety and Health have been summoned to investigate.

This comes on the heels of an accident Monday off Vasco Road, near the Contra Costa-Alameda County line, in which 52-year-old Fred Telford of Hilmar was killed when his bulldozer tipped over and rolled over him. Cal-OSHA is also investigating that death.

The truck driver, identified as John H. Briggs, 58, of Del Norte, was heading south when he collided with a Jeep on Highway 82 near the Buffalo Valley intersection at 1:17 p.m. The driver of the Jeep was identified as Claudia Tena de Ramirez, 24, of Glenwood Springs.

Glenwood Springs Post Independent reports:

De Ramirez was making a left turn onto Highway 82 from County Road 154 when the accident occurred. The semi truck hit the driver’s side of the Jeep and pushed it across both oncoming traffic lanes, coming to rest on the northeast shoulder of the highway.

Alcohol, drugs and speed are not considered factors in this crash, the state patrol reported. Briggs was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash, but was not injured.

Briggs has been charged with wreckless driving causing a death.

WABASH, IN – A semi truck stuck on the railroad tracks in Wabash was struck by an oncoming BNSF train on Monday, Aug 15th.

The accident occurred at about 1 p.m. at the Sinclair and Carroll Streets railroad crossing. The train was unable to stop in time to avoid crashing into the 18 wheeler that was stuck on the tracks, police told reporters.

The impact severed the semi to leave the cab on one side of the tracks and the trailer on the other.

There did not appear to be any injuries at the time of the accident.

Big Rig Flips Over Off Peoria Arizona Highway and Catches Fire

PEORIA, AZ – A big rig truck accident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 16, causing the semi truck to roll over and catch fire.

The truck was turned on its side in the dirt off of the highway near 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road in Peoria, AZ. Peoria is approximately 14 miles northwest of Phoenix and about 39 mile northwest of Chandler, Arizona.

The Peoria Fire Department arrived on the scene to put out the fire.

The status of the driver’s injuries are unknown.

Two Semi Trucks Crash Within 5 Hours on Colorado I-70

WILDERNEST, CO. – Two semi truck accidents occurred on Sunday, Aug 14, within 5 hours of each other at the same location on I-70.

The first semi truck traveling eastbound on I-70 rolled as many as five times at about 6 p.m. The rollover occurred at mile marker 204 between the Frisco and Silverthorne exits.

The second accident involving a Walmart semi truck occurred at about 10:56 p.m. where the semi sat jack-knifed next to the first truck in the same location.

Colorado State Patrol spokesman and trooper Nate Reid reported that both drivers escaped the accidents without an apparent injury.

“Everybody walked away. It was just a crazy place to be having wrecks last night,” Lake Dillon Fire-Rescue spokesman Steve Lipsher said.

PASADENA, CA – Marcos Costa, the 18 wheeler truck driver who killed two people on Angeles Crest Highway in 2008, was convicted on Friday, July 29, of involuntary manslaughter by a Pasadena jury.

Costa was charged with second-degree murder, after his runaway 18 wheeler semi truck swerved out of control down Angeles Crest Highway killing 12-year-old Angelina Posca, and her 58-year-old father, Angel George Posca of Palmdale.

The victims were in a sedan that was struck by Costa’s truck when they were pushed along the roadway and struck by several other cars before the truck slammed into a bookstore.

The jurors previously told the court they were in agreement on some of the major allegations but were divided on others.

After a week of deliberations, Costa was acquitted of second-degree murder charges, but the jury decided to convict him of two lesser counts of involuntary manslaughter and three counts of reckless driving causing an injury.
