North Platte Truck Accident Closes Nebraska I-30

NORTH PLATTE, NE – A sliding semi trailer caused a truck accident Saturday morning, January 22, that closed down an intersection in Lincoln County, Nebraska. There were no serious injuries in the single vehicle crash that occurred at the intersection of Buffalo Bill Avenue and Highway 30 in North Platte, Nebraska. The accident area is in the central west part of the state, about 92 miles north of Oberlin, Kansas and about 144 miles south of Rosebud, South Dakota.

On Saturday morning an unidentified trucker was driving a semi trailer through Lincoln County, NE. The trailer section was carrying a full load of wheat grain at the time of the truck accident. The 18 wheeler is owned by SQ Transport, based in Imperial, NE. It is not known where the driver was delivering the wheat.

A recent winter storm had left several inches of snow on the roadways. It appears that the streets had been plowed when the truck accident occurred but officials reported there were slick spots. Motorists were cautioned to drive carefully.

Shortly after 8:00 a.m. the semi driver was in North Platte, driving east on Highway 30, known locally as Rodeo Road. As he was approaching the intersection with Buffalo Bill Ave. a van reportedly pulled into his lane. According to police investigating the truck accident, the truck driver put on his brakes in order to avoid hitting the smaller vehicle. The semi driver was attempting to bring the tractor trailer to a stop, but caught a patch of ice on the street and the 18 wheeler went into a slide.

The semi skidded across the icy road and maneuvered around a vehicle, possibly the van that had pulled into his path. The tractor trailer continued through the intersection of Buffalo Bill and Highway 30/Rodeo and just missed hitting a traffic light pole and two telephone poles before it drove into a ditch running along the road. The driver was able to get out of the cab section and was not injured in the truck accident. The semi driver was credited with taking action to avoid hitting the van, and for instead steering his tractor trailer toward the ditch.

North Platte Police took control of the crash site and closed down the intersection. The bottom of the front hopper on the tractor trailer was wrecked in the truck accident and the front cab section was stuck in the snow-filled ditch. A team from Herbst Towing was put in charge of removing the damaged trailer section and hopper, and for pulling the cab section out of the snow. It would take the team a little over an hour to haul the semi cab out of the ditch.

A second tractor trailer was brought to the site of the truck accident and a crew spent hours transferring the load of wheat. The team used a siphon vacuum to offload the grain from the crashed trailer into the second truck. The workers also shoveled up the wheat grain that had spilled into the intersection.

Officials believed it would take most of the morning to clean up the truck accident site and expected to reopen the intersection of Buffalo Bill and Highway 30/Rodeo Rd by 12:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

At this point no charges have been brought against the semi driver. Some officials have stated that the truck accident was likely caused by the combination of slick road conditions and the van driver suddenly pulling into the path of the tractor trailer.

North Platte Police credited the semi driver and believe the truck accident could have caused more havoc if it was not for the driver’s quick thinking and skilled driving.

Nebraska Semi Truck Accident Near Omaha Claims Life of Driver

Wahoo, NE – According to Saunders County sheriff, a deadly semi truck accident occured on Monday night around 6pm about two miles east of Wahoo on Highway 22. A tractor trailer skidded on a patch of ice, jacknifed and then hit an oncoming SUV. Two other cars then came along and crashed into the wreck.

The driver of the semi truck, a 37 year old man, died at the scene. Three other people were treated and released from the hospital. The victim’s identity has not been released yet.

Not long after this accident, two other cars collided near the same spot. That crash was not related to the fatal collision, Sheriff Stukenholtz said. One person was injured in the second crash and also was treated at the Saunders County hospital and released.

Stukenholtz said the roadway “was extremely slick” and contributed to the crash.

Highway 92 between Mead and Wahoo has been shut down by the sheriff.

Omaha NE Semi Truck Accident on I-80 Fatality – Video

OMAHA, NE – On Thursday, Oct 8, 2009 at about 12:45 pm, a semi truck collided with a small passenger car on eastbound Interstate 80 just west of the 60th Street off ramp. The driver of the passenger car, a 2001 Dodge Neon, was killed in the semi truck accident. The deceased driver has been identified as Andrea M. Kersigo, 26 years old, from Omaha, Nebraska. No other injuries were reported. The only person in the Neon was the driver, Kersigo.

The crash occurred when Kersigo was moving to take the 60th Street exit but then appeared to change her mind and veered back onto the Interstate into the path of the oncoming semi truck. It appears Kersigo overcorrected then cut across several lanes of traffic when she collided with the big rig. The semi truck hit the driver’s side door of the Neon, crushing the vehicle under the semi’s cab. Witnesses at the scene described it as horrible.

The semi truck accident caused traffic to be backed up in both directions on the I-80. Motorists took detours to avoid the traffic jam, but the detours also became slow due to the heavy traffic.
