DUI Driver Critically Injured in Semi Truck Accident in Braselton, GA

BRASELTON, GA – A woman driving under the influence the wrong way on I-85 in Braselton, GA was critically injured after she crashed into two semi trucks and was ejected from her SUV on Friday, November 4, 2011.

Braselton is located in Barrow County, Gwinnett County, Hall County, and Jackson County, Georgia in the northeastern part of the state about 49 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The accident happened in Jackson County around 1:00 a.m. early Friday morning in the northbound lanes of I-85 near Highway 53 at Exit 129.

The driver of the SUV was identified as Linda Kay Corlew, 34 years old, from Buford, GA. Corlew attempted to drive southbound on the northbound lanes of the I-85 after entering the Interstate at Highway 53.

Corlew side-swiped the first 18 wheeler, then spun out of control and hit a Jeep Cherokee and a second tractor trailer. The SUV spun around again and then finally crashed into the front end of a Chevrolet van and was ejected from her Ford Explorer.

The Chevrolet van rolled over and landed on a cable guard rail. The accident also ruptured the fuel tank of the second big rig which caused a hazardous fuel spill. A Jackson County Hazmat team was called to the scene to contain the hazardous material spill. Fortunately no evacuations were ordered as a result of the spill.

Corlew was transported by ground ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville where hre condition was reported to be critical. The driver of the Chevrolet van plus a passenger from one of the semi trucks were also injured in the accident.

The driver of the Chevrolet van was identified as Shawn Olen McDowell, 30 years old, from Jefferson, GA. He was taken to Athens Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The northbound lanes of the Interstate were closed for about 4 hours while rescue crews, fire fighters, police and investigators worked the scene of the accident. Emergency responders were from the West Jackson Fire Department, the Georgia State Patrol, the Braselton Police Department, and Jackson County EMS. Traffic lanes on the Interstate were re-opened around 5:00 a.m.

Officials believe that alcohol was a factor in the accident. According to the Georgia State Patrol, Corlew was cited for a seat belt violation and charged with DUI as well as driving on the wrong side of the road.

Semi Truck With Double Trailer Overturns on I-85 in Braselton, GA

BRASELTON, GA – A semi truck pulling two trailers overturned on the southbound I-85 in Braselton, GA in Gwinnett County, Georgia just past the Barrow County line on September 18, 2011.

The semi-truck was pulling two trailers and one of the trailers contained hazardous material.Braselton is located in four Georgia counties: Barrow, Gwinnett, Hall, and Jackson Counties. It is about 22 miles northeast of Lawrenceville and about 49 miles northeast of Atlanta.

The tractor-trailer accident occurred around 4:15 a.m. in the morning in the southbound lanes shortly past the Highway 211 exit. The tandem hauler swerved into the center of the road, jacknifed and then turned over and landed on its side in a ditch after taking out a section of guard rail.

The truck was carrying a drum with a hazardous chemical and so a Hazmat team was called in to deal with the situation. The material was identified as ethyl acetate, a flammable liquid.

Firefighters did not know the condition of the container that was holding the flammable liquid because the vehicle was overturned and on its side. They decided to take precautions and use multiple wreckers to carefully pull the truck and its two trailers into an upright position so the container could be inspected.

No cars were allowed to pass by the truck until it was determined that it was safe so the southbound lanes of I-85 near the Gwinnett and Barrow County line had to be shut down for several hours. As it turned out the container did not leak and there was no spillage of any hazardous material.

The semi truck driver received minor injuries and was treated at the scene. Fortunately, no other vehicles were involved in the mishap and there were no other injuries.

Authorities do not know the cause of the accident and it remains under investigation.

Motorcyclist Killed by 18 Wheeler on Georgia I-85

SUWANEE, GA – A deadly accident involving a motorcyclist and 18 wheeler was the result of an airborne tire tread the motorcyclist hit while traveling on the northbound I-85 causing him to lose control and ending up in the pathway of an oncoming semi truck, according to Gwinnett County police.

The victim, identified as Lonnie Cross, 35, was riding his motorcycle Wednesday, Sept 14, at about 5:30 p.m. in the left lane of northbound I-85 at the I-985 split when he hit the tire tread after it had been struck by another vehicle.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports:

Cross lost control of his motorcycle, and after laying the motorcycle down on the roadway, he ended up resting in the center lane in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer, police say. The driver of the truck could not avoid running over Cross, police say.

Cross died at Gwinnett Medical Center. Police say no charges were pending.

For some time, all lanes of I-85 were closed in the area, with traffic being re-routed to I-985.

In recent months at least a half dozen motorcyclists have been involved in fatal crashes on metro Atlanta highways.

Georgia Truck Driver Flips 18 Wheeler on I-95 in Jessup Maryland

JESSUP, MD – A Georgia truck driver was traveling northbound on I-95 in Jessup MD when his tractor trailer rolled over killing at least one person, police say. The driver of the 18 wheeler was identified as David Arturo Espinoza of Culledon, Ga.

The truck accident occurred just before 11:40 a.m near the exit for Maryland Route 175. After the accident, a portion of the exit ramp lane to Route 175 was closed, but drivers were able to still get off while the semi trailer was being off-loaded and removed from the road.

Maryland State Police said that the truck driver was in the third lane and ran off the road, up an embankment, and overturned in the wood line. No other vehicles were involved.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation at this time.

Truck Hits and Kills 12-Year Old Lakeland Boy In Georgia Accident

LAKELAND – On Saturday, July 23, a truck struck and killed a 12-year-old boy from Lakeland who was visiting his father in Georgia.

The young victim was identified as Christian D. West. According to his mother, Kimberly Dean, Christian was visiting his father, Daniel West, in Lakeland, Ga., when the accident occurred. Dean said her son was at his grandmother’s home and was crossing the street at 9:40 p.m. when a truck hit him. He died from injuries as a result.

The Ledger.com reports:

Christian was the youngest of three children and attended Doris A. Sanders Learning Center in Lakeland. He was active in Special Olympics and received ribbons for basketball and bowling, his favorite sports.

Dean said Christian was a fighter. He was born with heart defects and spent the first years of his life battling the conditions.

“The first four to five years of his life was a big fight,” she said. “He was just a fighter.”

He was later diagnosed with Down syndrome.

Despite his health problems, Dean said, her son had a winning personality and always had a smile on his face. He loved listening to music and making his family laugh.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” she said of his death. “I just wanted my baby.”

Christian’s funeral will be held Friday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Lakeland Funeral Home at 2125 S. Bartow Highway.

Truck Driver Kills Six Year Old Girl in DUI Accident in Blue Ridge Georgia

BLUE RIDGE, GA – A six year old girl who was on vacation with her family from Florida, was killed when a 16 year-old truck driver under the influence of alcohol slammed into the back of a van stopped at a traffic light.

A spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol told FOX 5 News three vehicles were involved in an accident on State Route 515 near Josh Hall Road just after 11:30 p.m. Friday in an incident where alcohol is to blame for the first fatality on a Georgia roadway this Fourth of July weekend.

My FOX Atlanta reports:

Authorities said a 6-year-old girl inside the van was killed. Her mother, father, and four siblings, ranging in age from 3 to 10, were injured and taken to Fannin Regional Medical Center. The family was on a vacation road trip from Palm Bay, Florida.

Police have arrested the passenger of the pickup. Cody Ray Totherow, 16 of Murphy, North Carolina, has been charged with Possession of Alcohol and Open Container. They said the 16-year-old driver will face charges once the investigation is complete.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.

Panel Truck Hits 18 Wheeler Stalled on I-20 Near Thomson Georgia

THOMSON, GA. – An 18 wheeler accident occurred on Tuesday morning at about 3 a.m., June 21, when a panel truck crashed into an eastbound Reinhart Food Service semi truck that was stalled on the I-20 Near Thomson Georgia.

Thomson traffic piled up in the morning commute as traffic from the accident was diverted. The city of Thomson is located about 33 miles southwest of Augusta. Emergency and cleanup crews arrived on the scene in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 20 at about the 165-mile marker around 7 a.m.

Georgia State Patrol Trooper First Class Ben Rollins said there were no serious injuries, “believe it or not.” Eastbound traffic was diverted to Georgia Highway 80 at the Camak-Warrenton exit. The interstate was cleared about 8:30 a.m., according to the Georgia State Patrol post in Grovetown.

Jon Clements drove the panel truck owned by Augusta Delivery Service. He suffered a minor head injury.

Company safety director Vernon Collins, who also is Columbia County coroner, said Clements would have been ejected from the truck if he had not been wearing his seat belt.

“It’s a miracle he wasn’t killed,” Collins said.

SUV Truck Rolls on I-75 in Catoosa County Georgia Killing Three

CATOOSA COUNTY, GA.- Three people were killed early Sunday morning, June 5, when they were ejected from an SUV that rolled on Interstate 75. GSP Trooper Cooper Burt says the accident occured around 5:30 am, Sunday, near mile marker 343 in Catoosa County. The three passengers were not wearing seatbelts.

According to Burt, the driver of the SUV made their way to the left lane from the center, left the roadway, over-corrected, and rolled several times as a result.

WRCB TV reports:

Trooper Burt says a tractor-trailer struck one of the victims lying on the road, but will not face charges. The trooper says the truck driver was unable to stop in time due to the size of the vehicle.

A second car hit debris while passing through, but didn’t strike a victim.

The southbound lanes of I-75 were shutdown for over four hours, but have reopened.

The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was taken to a local hospital.

The accident is still under investigation by the GSP. Burt says it is unknown at this time if drugs or alcohol are factors.

The victims’ identities will be released after family members are notified.

No further information has been formally released.

ATLANTA, GA – One person was killed Thursday afternoon, May 5, in a tractor trailer truck accident on the I-20 on Atlanta, Georgia according to the Atlanta police.

Police report that a passenger vehicle and a tractor trailer truck were involved in the accident when a red car smashed up under the rear of the tractor trailer.

Newlywed Killed in Atlanta Semi Truck Accident

ATLANTA, GA – A newlywed was killed on April 25 in Atlanta, GA when her car rolled over after being clipped by a semi truck.

Atlanta is in Fulton County, Georgia in the northwest-central part of the state about 147 miles northwest of Augusta.

The accident occurred Monday evening at about 6:00 p.m. in the outer loop of I-285 on the west side near the Martin Luther King Jr. overpass.

The recently-married woman who was killed in the accident was driving a Nissan Sentra passenger car in the southbound lanes at the time of the accident. Her car was struck by a tractor trailer that was changing lanes. The semi truck hit her vehicle, sending her into the concrete guard rail.

After hitting the barrier, the car came back across the freeway and was hit by another semi tractor (a bobtail truck – just the cab portion of a semi).

Police told FOX 5 News a Nissan sedan was on the road when the driver of a tractor trailer attempted to change lanes in front of them. The truck clipped the car, which sent it into the inner barrier wall. Police say the car bounced back into the traffic lanes, where it was struck by a semi, which was not carrying a load.

Rescue crews had to use the Jaws of Life to get the victims from the car. The woman, who has not yet been identified, died at the scene. The man was taken to an area hospital with critical injuries. Atlanta police said the woman was recently married. Neither of the truck drivers involved was hurt.

The victim was identified as 21-year-old Danielle Holly. The male passenger who was injured in the accident was her husband, whose identy has not yet been released.

Neither truck driver was injured in the accident. News reports have identified the driver of the semi truck who first struck Holly’s vehicle as 51 year-old Jack Parsons. According to the Fox Channel 5 website article, investigators plan to charge Parsons with vehicular homicide for the improper lane change.
