Early Thursday afternoon 51 year old Robert E. Daumer of Northampton, PA was driving a 1982 Mack Cruiseliner semi tractor trailer north on I-495, traveling through New Castle County, DE. There was one passenger riding in the cab section of the semi truck, identified as 63 year old Janis Chabak of Birdsboro, PA. The bed of the open trailer section was empty at the time of the truck accident, and it is not known if the driver had just made a delivery or was on his way to pick up cargo.

The truck accident happened shortly before 1:00 p.m. Thursday afternoon as the semi tractor trailer was moving through the city of Wilmington, traveling in the center lane of the highway. As the 18 wheeler was approaching the exit for Edgemoor Road, the traffic ahead of the semi driver suddenly began to slow down. The driver, Mr. Daumer, was directly behind another vehicle and tried to maneuver to avoid a collision.

The truck driver pulled his rig to the left where he crashed into a guardrail running along the center dividing median of the interstate. He tried to bring the semi tractor trailer back onto the highway and according to officials over corrected. Mr. Daumer lost control and the tractor trailer crossed over all of the northbound lanes of I-495. The semi trailer crashed into and then hopped over the guardrail on the right side of the highway, the cab plunging several feet down the embankment. The 18 wheeler truck finally came to a stop, the trailer section precariously balanced on the edge of the interstate guardrail.

No other persons or vehicles were involved in the truck accident.

Police and rescue teams quickly responded to the crash site on I-495. Officials shut down the northbound lanes of the interstate surrounding the truck accident scene while emergency personnel began to work to free Mr. Daumer and Ms. Chabak from the cab section of the semi. Because the trailer section of the truck was resting on the edge of the embankment the rescue team had to balance and secure the semi before the truck driver and his passenger could attempt to exit the semi’s cab. It would take almost two hours to stabilize the 18 wheeler enough so that the two could safely get out of the truck.

Once the driver and passenger were free they were treated at the scene and then transported by ambulance to nearby Christiana Hospital. The exact nature of the injuries that they received in the truck accident was not released but both are expected to recover.

The northbound lanes of I-495 would remain closed for several hours while highway crews cleared up the truck accident site. A tow truck was brought in to haul the tractor trailer back onto the highway and away from the crash site. Other workers had to repair the interstate guardrails that the 18 wheeler damaged in the collision.

Officials investigating the incident reconstructed the crash and determined that the semi driver, Mr. Daumer, was responsible for the truck accident. Authorities found that he was driving too close to the vehicle ahead of him on the interstate and did not leave enough room to avoid a collision.

The driver was charged with Following Too Close and it is believe the truck accident investigation is completed.

Local emergency personnel from Anne Arundel County Fire Department arrived at the scene of the truck accident and worked to extricate the driver of the Corvette using the Jaws of Life.

Shortly after 4:30 p.m. Friday afternoon a semi trailer truck was traveling west on the Bay Bridge in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. A red Corvette driven by a 24 year old man was directly in front of the 18 wheeler truck. The trailer truck and car were both traveling in the right lane of the bridge.

As the two vehicles crossed the span over the Chesapeake Bay, the red Corvette slowed down in the afternoon commuter traffic. The semi trailer truck was unable to slow or maneuver to avoid a collision and slammed into the back of the smaller vehicle.

The force of the truck accident crushed the red Corvette and trapped the driver inside. According to some witnesses the Corvette was pushed to the edge of the bridge by the impact. Steel beams built in the westbound section of the span may have stopped the Corvette and prevented it from plunging off the bridge into the waters of the Chesapeake Bay.

MD State Police shut down the westbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while emergency personnel provided aid to the victim.

Local emergency personnel from Anne Arundel County Fire Department arrived at the scene of the truck accident and worked to extricate the driver of the Corvette using the Jaws of Life and other tools. Once freed the driver was stabilized at the scene and then transported by Maryland State Police medical helicopter to Shock Trauma Medical Center in Baltimore, MD. His injuries were described as serious but were not considered life threatening.

The truck driver did not suffer injuries in the collision and the trailer truck was not seriously damaged or disabled in the rear-end truck accident.

MD State Police shut down the westbound lanes of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while emergency personnel provided aid to the victim and the medical helicopter picked up the man and flew him to the hospital.

No commuter vehicles were allowed on the bridge for almost two hours while highway crews cleared the wreckage of the car and authorities conducted a reconstruction of the truck accident.

The closures caused significant traffic delays as there were no alternative routes for drivers to take.

No charges have been made at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.

Crews cleanup overturned load in semi truck accident on I-95

Early Tuesday morning 35 year old Michael Daliessio of Smyrna, DE was traveling northbound on I-95, hauling a load of large paper rolls on the flatbed of his truck. Each of the rolls on the tractor trailer reportedly weighed over two thousand pounds. Mr. Daliessio allegedly did not have his cargo properly secured and at around 5:30 a.m. the tie down straps began to break and one of the rolls fell off the flatbed.

After the first roll fell off, the other rolls started falling off the 18 wheeler and they flew into the air, hitting two passenger vehicles on the interstate. The drivers of the two vehicles were not injured in the accidents. There was no report on the condition of the two cars that were hit by the airborne paper rolls.

After losing its load of paper rolls the truck driver lost control of the tractor trailer and it turned over on the highway. The truck driver was able to get out of the cab of the tractor trailer and was not injured.

The disabled 18 wheeler ended up near the exit for the Route 1 interchange. The truck blocked all but one of the northbound lanes on the interstate and the paper rolls ended up littered across the road.

Delaware State Police responded to the scene of the truck accident and secured the area. Both the south and north exits from Route 1 onto I-95 were closed down as crews worked to clear the overturned tractor trailer and the paper rolls from the interstate. The highway was shut down for approximately four hours and at times the morning commuter traffic was back up for miles. The rollover truck accident also affected Route 1 and other roads in the vicinity as drivers attempted to detour around the accident scene.

Accident investigators have determined that the truck driver, Mr. Daliessio, was possibly negligent in securing his cargo. Delaware State Police confirmed that the truck driver has been charged with one count of a Federal Motor Carrier Safety Violation for Failure to Properly Secure Cargo.
