Semi Truck Collides with Pickup Truck in Wellton Arizona

WELLTON, AZ – An accident involving a 1989 Peterbilt semi truck and a GMC pickup occurred on Tuesday, December 6, at about 10:50 a.m at the intersection of Avenue 36E and Highway 80 in Wellton, Arizona. Two people were airlifted by Care Flight helicopters to Phoenix-area hospitals Tuesday after a pickup and semi truck collided near Wellton, as reported by The Yuma Sun. Wellton is about 155 mile southwest of Phoenix.

Firefighters found the semi truck completely crushed and lying upside down with fuel leaking onto the ground and onto the driver. The GMC pickup was about 70 yards from where the wreck occurred, and its cab was completely crushed.

David Rodriguez, Wellton Fire Department spokesman, told the media:

“I would swear that intersection is cursed. We have had so many accidents there over the years, including two fatalities.”

“The semi truck driver’s legs and hip were pinned and he was hanging upside down with fuel leaking on him,” Rodriguez said. “When the semi truck hit the pickup, it smashed the cab all the way over to the driver’s side.”

Rodriguez said firefighters extricated both drivers, who were the only occupants of their vehicles. Firefighters assisted Tri-Valley Ambulance paramedics in treating the drivers and prepping them for transport.

Landing zones were made for the helicopters, and once when they arrived, Rodriguez said firefighters helped paramedics load the patients, who were complaining of leg and chest pain. Both patients were flown to Phoenix due to the extent of their injuries.

According to witnesses, the GMC pickup failed to stop at the stop sign on Avenue 36E and pulled out in front of the semi truck. The semi-truck was loaded with some type of manure. Both vehicles were totaled.

The Wellton Police Department, Yuma County Sheriff’s Office, Tacna Fire Department, Yuma County Public Works and the US. Border Patrol also responded to the crash.

Truck Driver Dies in Fiery Tanker Truck Accident in Chandler, AZ

CHANDLER, AZ – A truck driver was killed on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 when two tanker trucks collided on Interstate 10 in Chandler, AZ.

Chandler is located in Maricopa County, Arizona in the southwest-central part of the state about 15 1/2 miles southeast of Tempe, 8 miles south of Mesa and 6 miles southwest of Gilbert.

The accident occurred around 8:00 a.m. in rush hour traffic on I-10 between the 202 Freeway and Chandler Blvd. when a dairy truck rear-ended another semi tanker that was hauling flammable material.

The tanker was carrying a mixture of 30 percent gasoline and 70 percent diesel fuel which burst into flames upon impact. The driver of the dairy truck managed to get out of his cab but died at the scene.

A huge cloud of black smoke that billowed from the wrecked truck could be seen for miles. Authorities imposed an evacuation order for all businesses within a one mile radius of I-10 and Chandler Boulevard.

Chandler police were instructed to begin evacuating hotels and businesses in the evacuation area. The evacuation order was in effect for about 30 minutes.

Fire crews were unable to reach the blaze for almost two hours and finally put it out around 9:45 a.m.

There was some concern for the environmental hazard so the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality was called in by firefighters at the accident scene to assess air quality and to monitor the situation.

Burning diesel fuel can emit fumes from the fire itself as well as tiny air particulates that can infiltrate lungs and the bloodstream of people breathing the air nearby. The particulates are known as PM-2.5 because they measure 2.5 micrometers or less in diameter and are among the pollutants that can produce the worst health effects if they are inhaled.

Traffic was shut down in both directions on I-10 at Chandler Blvd. plus Loop 202 and the westbound San Tan Freeway were also closed for hours after the crash. Traffic was re-routed to Chandler Boulevard and Ray Road in the meantime.

ELOY, AZ – Four people were killed Thursday morning, Aug 8, when a semi truck crossed the median on Interstate 10 near Picacho Peak and crashed into a minivan, shutting down the westbound lanes for almost 7 hours.

Authorities said that the minivan exploded into flames, killing all three people inside.

The truck driver, carrying produce for Sierra Transportation, was heading east at about 7:00 a.m. when he lost control of his 18 wheeler and crossed over the median.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that the accident left one person in critical condition and two others severely injured.

AZ Central.com reports:

The semi crossed the dirt median into the oncoming westbound lanes and slammed into the minivan. The minivan exploded into flames, killing all three people inside, officials said.

A Swift Transportation truck traveling west then collided with the Sierra truck, which had rolled over, leaving the trailer blocking both lanes.

The Swift semi truck’s driver was in critical condition and transferred to Maricopa Medical Center for treatment. The Sierra semi truck’s driver that crossed the median died in the wreck, authorities said. The co-driver of the Sierra truck and the driver of a two-door Honda sedan, also involved in the collision, were transported to the University Medical Center in Tuscon.

It is not yet known where both trucks were coming from. A spokesman for Phoenix-based Swift Transportation declined to comment.

DPS was uncertain of who was in the minivan and where it was headed.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.

Big Rig Flips Over Off Peoria Arizona Highway and Catches Fire

PEORIA, AZ – A big rig truck accident occurred on Tuesday morning, August 16, causing the semi truck to roll over and catch fire.

The truck was turned on its side in the dirt off of the highway near 83rd Avenue and Happy Valley Road in Peoria, AZ. Peoria is approximately 14 miles northwest of Phoenix and about 39 mile northwest of Chandler, Arizona.

The Peoria Fire Department arrived on the scene to put out the fire.

The status of the driver’s injuries are unknown.

The incident remains under investigation at this time.

Arizona Truck Accident Causes Explosions and Power Outages

CHANDLER, AZ – A truck accident in Maricopa County, Arizona Wednesday, April 21, 2010, caused several small explosions and power outages when a semi slammed into an electrical power box. The collision between the 18 wheeler and a minivan occurred in Chandler, AZ at the juncture of Alma School Road and Ray Road. The accident area is in the Phoenix metro region in the center of the state, 174 miles east of Blythe, California and 370 miles west of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning a semi trailer truck was traveling west on Ray Road in Chandler, AZ. When the 18 wheeler reached the intersection with Alma School Road a minivan turned left in front of the truck.

The truck driver was unable to slow or maneuver to avoid an accident and slammed into the minivan. The force of the truck accident sent the minivan across the road into oncoming traffic.

After colliding with the minivan the semi trailer truck went off the road and crashed into an electrical box, cutting off power in the area. The truck accident punctured one of the rig’s fuel tanks, setting off explosions and about fifty gallons of diesel fuel poured from the damaged tank, feeding the fire which engulfed the front side of the truck.

The semi truck would hit a concrete wall and a palm tree before finally coming to a stop in front of a Boston Market restaurant in a shopping plaza.

Chandler police and firefighters responded to the truck accident scene to secure the area and put out the burning truck.

The truck driver was able to escape the cab of his semi before it exploded into flames. Chandler Emergency personnel treated him at the scene and then transported him to a local hospital.

The two women in the minivan sustained serious injuries in the truck accident and at least one of them had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency workers. They were stabilized at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Authorities report that they are in critical condition.

The truck accident and fire left the semi charred on one side and with a huge hole in the driver’s side of the windshield. The minivan was crushed and had considerable damage to the front section.

When the power box was damaged in the truck accident it cut off electricity in the area from Ray and Alma School Road to Interstate 10 and then north to Alma School Road to Knox Road, affecting more than 500 customers. Utility crews would work for several hours and restored power to the neighborhood around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities shut down the area around the truck accident scene for several hours while officers conducted an investigation and road crews cleared debris from the traffic lanes. A city crew was in charge of cleaning up the spilled diesel fuel. The intersection finally reopened around 5:30 p.m.
No charges have been brought at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.

Phoenix Bus Crashes On I-10; Rollover Claims 6 Lives

PHOENIX, AZ — Six people were killed in a deadly bus crash at 5:27 a.m Friday morning when a bus carrying 21 passengers rolled over after hitting another vehicle. The bus driver lost control and veered to the left, then to the right and off the road, rolling over at least once while several people were ejected from the bus, according to Arizona Department of Public Safety spokesman Bart Graves. The crash occurred on Interstate 10 about 25 miles south of Phoenix.

Fifteen of the 21 bus passengers were transported to hospitals, including five who suffered serious injuries and were taken by helicopter.

Aerial video showed emergency crews from several agencies breaking out windows, trying to remove victims from the mangled bus. Medics set up a triage area on the freeway to treat the injured. A total of five medical helicopters were called out to the scene.

Graves told reporters that two men and four women were killed. The bus was carrying 21 passengers. All those killed and injured were on the bus.

Helicopters landed on the freeway to airlift the most critically injured.

Fifteen of the 21 bus passengers were transported to hospitals, including five who suffered serious injuries and were taken by helicopter, Graves said. Two 11-year-olds — a boy and a girl — are among the injured.

Graves told reporters that two men and four women were killed. The bus was carrying 21 passengers. All of those killed and injured were on the bus.

Helicopters landed on the freeway to airlift the most critically injured.

Eight of the patients, including the 11-year-old boy and the bus driver, were taken to Maricopa Medical Center.

“We’re seeing broken spines, broken pelvises, broken ribs — pretty severe injuries,” said Michael Murphy.

The bus, which is owned by a Los Angeles company called Tierra Santa, reportedly was coming from Durango, Mexico. A new driver took over when the bus crossed the border in El Paso, Texas.

Westbound traffic was being diverted at Casa Blanca Road. That detour will take traffic north to connect with Loop 202 and 101. Drivers will be able to take Riggs Road or Queen Creek Road back to I-10.

Truck Collides With School Bus Near Phoenix AZ

MESA, AZ — A school bus carrying 10 children was hit by a utility truck early Monday Morning. The accident occurred at VAl Vista and University in MESA, Arizona.

According to MyFoxPhoenix, the children appeared to have sustained minor injuries, but five of the children reported that they felt like their back had been hurt.

The driver of the truck was injured and was taken to a valley hospital.

The students attend a Charter school near Ray and Val Vista.

Arizona Truck Accident Rollover Kills Texas Woman

Picacho Peak, Arizona – Shari Wood Linder, a 50-year-old woman from Quinlan, Texas was traveling with her husband, 53-year-old Ricky Keith Linder, from Blythe, Calif., to El Paso, Texas when the big rig tractor trailer she was driving rolled over igniting into flames.

The trucking accident occurred on July 24th at approximately 9 a.m. MST near Picacho Peak on Interstate 10, which is the main route between Phoenix and Tucson. The highway was closed to traffic for more than four hours.

The big rig, owned by Saia Trucking, was hauling two trailers of automotive and cleaning products that included aerosol cans when it suddenly rolled over on the Arizona Highway.

Officials with the Arizona Department of Public Safety say 53-year-old Ricky Keith Linder was listed in stable condition at University Medical Center in Tucson with non life-threatening injuries.
