SUWANEE, GA – A motorist was killed in a fiery crash on October 26, when a tractor trailer changed lanes and pinned his vehicle up against a railing on I-85 in Suwanee, GA. Suwanee is located in in Gwinnett County, Georgia in the northern part of the state about 33.4 miles northeast of Atlanta.
The accident happened around 11:00 a.m. on the southbound lanes of I-85 in Suwanee near the Old Peachtree Rd overpass. Hafiz M. Ilyas, 40 years old, from Marietta, GA was driving his small passenger car (a 1994 Toyota Camry) in the right hand lane.
A tractor trailer driven by Raymond L. Hatt Jr., 35 years old, from Manton, GA, made a lane change forcing Ilyas onto the shoulder, causing him to lose control of the vehicle. Ilyas’s car swerved back onto the freeway and became trapped, pinning his car between the truck and the railing and subsequently catching fire.
Ilyas was killed after becoming trapped in his vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to an article at the Suwanee.Patch.com website, Hatt was arrested and faces charges of “second degree vehicular homicide, unsafe lane change and failure to signal lane change.”
The accident tied up traffic for hours and was finally cleared around 4:30 p.m.
