SOUTH STRABANE, Penn. — A semi truck driver was traveling west on the Interstate 70 in Washington County on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, when he drove his tractor trailer across a grassy median hitting two cars that were traveling in the opposite direction, crushing a Maryland woman and her adult daughter to death in their Dodge Charger. Four other people were injured.
The accident occurred just before 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 24, just west of the Lakeview Drive overpass, closing the eastbound lanes for several hours. Authorities told the media that weather due to a light snowfall was not a factor in the crash.
The accident also caused a Chevy Trailblazer traveling on the I-70 to drive into the roof of the overturned 18 wheeler. Four people in the SUV, including two children, were injured. Police did not name the children. Brandy Lynn Gray, 33, of Scenery Hill and one of the child passengers were injured seriously, police said. Driver Darlene Gray, 59, of Washington and the other child sustained moderate injuries.
The trucker, 44-year old Yevgeniy Bugreyev of West Sacramento, Calif.,was charged with two counts of homicide by vehicle by state police. Bugreyev was arraigned Saturday afternoon in Washington before District Judge Robert Redlinger, who set his bond at $1 million pending a preliminary hearing.
The two victims were identified by Washington County Coroner Tim Warco as 57-year old as Karen Babka and her daughter 21-year old Kaitlin Babka, both of Hughesville, Md.
The incident remains under investigation at this time.
