KALAMAZOO, Mich. — An 18 wheeler truck driver was killed on Monday, July 30, when his semi truck collided with a pickup truck on US-131.
The accident occurred in West Kalamazoo MI, (Oshtemo Township), about 5 miles from downtown Kalamazoo at about 1:00 p.m. in the northbound lanes just past the West Main exit in Kalamazoo County, backing up traffic for hours.
The semi truck was traveling northbound on U.S. 131 and passed the West Main Street Exit at the M-43 interchange.
The trucker apparently intended to get off at the Main Street Exit. About .6 of a mile north of the interchange, the trucker attempted to use the emergency turnaround to go south on 131 to return to the exit. Emergency turnarounds are for emergency vehicles only.
Another northbound motorist, Garry Bixler, 67 years old from Shelbyville, MI was driving a pickup truck with a camper trailer. He saw that the big rig was accelerating towards him from the left and the collision was unavoidable.
The pickup driver swerved quickly to get out of the way. The pickup truck flipped and the camper landed on top of him. The semi truck crashed into the pickup and the semi cab burst into flames, killing the trucker.
Another motorist was traveling southbound on the 131 and noticed the accident. He helped Bixler loosen his seat belt and escape, virtually unharmed, before the semi truck blew.
The accident caused traffic to tie up and slow down. As a result of the traffic slow down, there were two more accidents that followed the fatal accident, one on the northbound and one on the southbound side of 131.
