Man Seriously Injured in South Dakota Semi Truck Accident

STURGIS, SD – A man was seriously injured Monday afternoon, July 12, when he collided head on with a semi trailer truck on a highway in Meade County, South Dakota. The truck accident occurred in a construction zone on Interstate 90 near Sturgis, SD. The accident area is in the west central section of the state about 29 miles northwest of Rapid City, SD and about 113 miles east of Gillette, Wyoming.

South Dakota Highway patrol and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene.

Shortly before 4:00 p.m. Monday afternoon 54 year old William Lukkes of Piedmont, SD was driving his Kenworth semi trailer truck east on Interstate 90 in Meade County, SD. At the same time 18 year old Christian Robison of Sturgis was driving a 1990 Ford Tempo sedan westbound on the interstate.

As the Ford Tempo approached the section of the interstate between exits 31 and 32 he encountered traffic which had slowed down due to construction work, where the westbound lanes were reduced down to two lanes.

Mr. Robison may not have noticed the stalled traffic until the last moment, because as he reached the area he suddenly swerved through the center traffic pylon cones set up to direct traffic in the construction zone. The Ford Tempo went through the traffic cones and across the interstate into the eastbound lanes of traffic, directly into the path of the eastbound Kenworth semi trailer truck driven by Mr. Lukkes.

The semi trailer truck did not have enough time to swerve to avoid a collision and plowed head-on into the passenger car. The impact of the truck accident crushed the front section of the Ford Tempo. The tractor trailer truck continued to the side of the interstate where it finally came to a rest.

Troopers with the South Dakota Highway patrol and emergency medical personnel responded to the scene of the truck accident. The driver of the Ford passenger car was seriously injured in the head-on collision with the Kenworth semi. EMTs treated and stabilized Mr. Robison at the scene before he was airlifted by medical helicopter to Rapid City Regional Hospital.

The semi driver, Mr. Lukkes, was not injured in the truck accident and declined medical treatment.

Officers shut down a section of I-90 around the truck accident site, backing up traffic for about one and a half hours. During that time investigators reconstructed the head-on collision while highway crews worked to remove the demolished car and other debris from the accident scene.

At this time authorities do not know why the driver of the Ford Tempo drove into the path of the oncoming semi trailer truck. No charges have been made at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
