Traffic Stalls as Truck Overturns on San Diego Highway
SAN DIEGO, CA – Monday morning commuter traffic stalled when a semi trailer truck overturned on a highway in San Diego County, California. The truck accident occurred on Interstate 5 near the city of San Diego and dumped tons of gravel onto the roadway as well as an unknown amount of diesel fuel. The truck accident area is in the southwest section of the state about 121 miles southeast of Los Angeles, CA and about 355 miles west of Phoenix, Arizona.

California Highway Patrol and San Diego County emergency personnel responded to the scene.
At around 9:00 a.m. Monday morning, July 19, 52 year old truck driver Timothy Glass of San Diego was driving a semi trailer truck south on Interstate 5 in San Diego County. The semi was hauling a trailer loaded with thousands of pounds of gravel.
As the semi trailer truck moved through the area near Mount Soledad just south of California State Route 52 one of the truck’s tires blew out, throwing the 18 wheeler rig out of control. The trailer truck tipped and rolled over, falling across the left fast lane of the interstate and a portion of the center divider median.
The force of the truck accident caused thousands of pounds of gravel to spill out onto all four southbound lanes of the highway. According to police the layer of crushed rock was approximately two inches thick and covered about 75 yards of the interstate. The rollover truck accident also damaged at least one of the semi’s fuel tanks and diesel fuel spilled out onto the road surface.
California Highway Patrol and San Diego County emergency personnel responded to the scene of the rollover truck accident. The truck driver, Mr. Glass, was treated and stabilized at the collision site and then transported by ambulance to Scripps Memorial Hospital in nearby La Jolla, CA. Authorities reported that the truck driver sustained injuries that ranged from minor to moderate and were considered non life threatening.

Highway crews reported to the site of the overturned truck accident and worked to remove the tons of gravel from the interstate. The spilled cargo had to be scooped up and loaded onto another truck before it could be toted away. A heavy duty tow truck was also brought to the scene to get the semi trailer truck back upright and off the highway traffic lanes.
CHP officers closed down a section of southbound I-5 surrounding the truck accident site while the crews worked and while authorities reconstructed the rollover incident. Investigators are also checking out the semi trailer truck to determine if it was in good working order at the time of the incident.
The truck accident site was completely cleared and all southbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1:00 p.m. Monday afternoon.
No charges have been brought against the driver at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
