Two Truck Accidents Same Company, Same Spot, Same Day

CHARLOTTE, NC – A trucking company’s semi trailers were involved in two separate accidents Friday, July 2, at the same spot in Charlotte, North Carolina. The trucks owned by Boyd Brothers in Alabama were involved in incidents early Friday morning and again later around noon at the area where southbound Interstate 85 merges onto southbound Interstate 77. The truck accident area is in the far southwest section of the state, about 92 miles north of Columbia, South Carolina and about 80 miles south of Winston-Salem, NC.

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials investigated both truck accidents and believe that speed was the likely factor in the rollovers.

The first truck accident occurred at around 5:00 a.m. Friday morning when the unidentified Boyd Brothers driver was traveling south on I-85. He was driving a flatbed trailer carrying a cargo of about 42,000 pounds of coiled steel, traveling from Maryland to Richburg, SC. As the truck driver attempted to exit onto southbound I-77 he lost control on the ramp and flipped the semi trailer truck over on its side.

The impact of the truck accident caused part of the cargo of coiled steel to fall off the flatbed trailer onto the interstate. The rollover also damaged at least one of the fuel tanks and some of the diesel spilled out.

Police and local emergency personnel responded to the scene of the truck accident. The driver was apparently able to get out of his rig and suffered minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.

The area around the collision site was shut down for about two hours while crews worked to upright the overturned flatbed and clean up the fuel spill. A crane had to be brought in to remove the coiled steel due to its weight. It would take more than an hour to hoist the steel off the highway onto another flatbed truck. The area was finally reopened to traffic at around 7:00 a.m. Friday morning.

The second truck accident occurred several hours later around noon Friday. A different Boyd Brothers driver was again operating a semi trailer truck carrying a cargo of coiled steel. Once again the unidentified driver lost control as he was maneuvering on the ramp from southbound I-85 to southbound I-77. The truck driver reportedly had trouble taking a curve and flipped the semi trailer flatbed, losing its cargo of coiled steel. Fortunately, the truck driver was uninjured in the truck accident.

North Carolina Highway Patrol officials investigated both truck accidents and believe that speed was the likely factor in the rollovers. They believe that the two drivers were traveling too fast and flipped over while taking a curve on the ramp.

After the two truck accidents Friday, the trucking company sent out an alert to all its drivers to reduce their speed and take extra caution on ramps and curves.
