Milk Tanker Truck Crashes into Wisconsin Backyard

BRODHEAD, WI – A semi tanker filled with milk crashed and overturned in a residential backyard in Green County, Wisconsin early Saturday morning on June 26. The truck accident occurred on Highway 11 in the town of Brodhead and caused the tanker to spill its cargo of milk and gallons of diesel fuel. The accident area is just north of the Illinois border in the far south central section of the state, about 35 miles south of the state capital Madison, WI and about 120 miles northwest of Chicago, IL.

Brodhead police, Green County Sheriff deputies and emergency personnel responded to the site of the early morning truck accident.

At about 4:30 a.m. Saturday morning an unidentified 41 year old truck driver was driving a milk tanker truck south on Highway 11 in Green County, WI. The milk tanker had the logo of J.J. Felicijan on its side, a freight long distance trucking company based in Poynette, WI. The tanker was carrying about 6,000 gallons of milk.

While the tanker truck was moving through the town of Brodhead, the driver suddenly lost control of the 18 wheeler at the intersection of Highway 11 and Ninth Street for unknown reasons. The tanker went off the highway and crashed into a tree at the side of the road before finally coming to a rest in the backyard of a local family, just a few inches from two small pools.

The impact of the truck accident caused heavy damage to the tanker.

Brodhead police, Green County Sheriff deputies and emergency personnel responded to the site of the early morning truck accident. The truck driver was treated and stabilized at the scene and then transported by ambulance to Monroe Hospital in nearby Monroe. The extent of his injuries are unknown but are believed to be non life threatening.

No other persons or vehicles were involved in the truck accident.

The impact of the truck accident caused heavy damage to the tanker. According to police the semi truck lost between 3,000 to 4,000 gallons of milk and about 100 gallons of diesel fuel. The spill area was about the size of a city block.

An environmental spill recovery crew based out of Loves Park, IL was brought to the site of the truck accident and worked most of Saturday to clean up the spilled fuel and milk, working alongside members of the Albany Fire Department’s Haz-Mat team, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and Green County Emergency Management office.

Reportedly the teams were able to contain the spills and they did not enter the Brodhead’s water system.

Other crews worked to remove the wreckage of the severely damaged tanker truck from the family’s backyard.

Brodhead police and Wisconsin State Patrol officers conducted a reconstruction of the truck accident but have not yet released what they believe caused the crashed.

No charges have been brought at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
