Prom Night Truck Accident in Maine One Dead, Three Injured
SCARBOROUGH, ME – One student was killed and three others injured in a truck accident Saturday, May 8, 2010, in Cumberland County, Maine that occurred as they were traveling to their Senior Prom. The deadly collision happened in Scarborough at the intersection of Holmes and Payne Roads. The accident area is southwest of the Portland metropolitan region in the far south section of the state, about 9 miles west of Cape Elizabeth, ME and 49 miles north of Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

The impact of the truck accident shoved the Pontiac about 100 feet down Payne Road and then over an embankment on the east side of the road landing upside down on its roof.
On Saturday 18 year old Stephen Delano, a senior at Scarborough High School was driving a 2006 white Pontiac G6 west on Holmes Road in Scarborough, ME. Mr. Delano had three passengers in the car with him, his best friend Kevin Grondin, and their two female dates. The four teens were headed to the Gorham High School Prom which was held at the Italian Heritage Center in Portland. The two females are students at Gorham High in Gorham.
The four young people had been taking pictures in Scarborough and were returning to Gorham to pick up prom tickets which had been left behind.
At around 5:25 p.m. Mr. Delano was traveling west on Holmes Road when he approached the intersection with Payne Road. At the same moment a jet fuel tanker truck, which was empty at the time, was going north on Payne Road. The tanker truck was driven by 38 year old Nathan Allen of Casco, ME, and is owned by J.P. Noonan Transportation.
When the Pontiac G6 went through the intersection it crossed directly into the path of the northbound tanker truck. The truck driver of the 18 wheeler was unable to avoid a collision and slammed broadside into the Pontiac.

The impact of the truck accident shoved the Pontiac about 100 feet down Payne Road and then over an embankment on the east side of the road. The force of the collision flipped the car over and it landed upside down on its roof.
Local Scarborough emergency personnel rushed to the scene of the truck accident. The driver of the car, Mr. Delano, suffered fatal injuries. He was transported to Maine Medical Center in Portland where he later died. The three other students were also hurt with what authorities described as non-life threatening injuries. The intersection was closed for several hours after the truck accident while rescuers worked and crews cleared the debris of the wreckage from the roadway.
Maine State Police officers were at the scene Saturday to reconstruct the collision. It had been storming during the day and the roads were described as “rain-soaked” which may have contributed to the truck accident. They believe either the car or the tanker truck went through a red light but have not determined which driver was at fault. At this time authorities do not believe alcohol or drugs were factors in the deadly collision.
The truck accident remains under investigation.
