Arizona Truck Accident Causes Explosions and Power Outages

CHANDLER, AZ – A truck accident in Maricopa County, Arizona Wednesday, April 21, 2010, caused several small explosions and power outages when a semi slammed into an electrical power box. The collision between the 18 wheeler and a minivan occurred in Chandler, AZ at the juncture of Alma School Road and Ray Road. The accident area is in the Phoenix metro region in the center of the state, 174 miles east of Blythe, California and 370 miles west of Las Cruces, New Mexico.

Shortly before 11:30 a.m. Wednesday morning a semi trailer truck was traveling west on Ray Road in Chandler, AZ. When the 18 wheeler reached the intersection with Alma School Road a minivan turned left in front of the truck.

The truck driver was unable to slow or maneuver to avoid an accident and slammed into the minivan. The force of the truck accident sent the minivan across the road into oncoming traffic.

After colliding with the minivan the semi trailer truck went off the road and crashed into an electrical box, cutting off power in the area. The truck accident punctured one of the rig’s fuel tanks, setting off explosions and about fifty gallons of diesel fuel poured from the damaged tank, feeding the fire which engulfed the front side of the truck.

The semi truck would hit a concrete wall and a palm tree before finally coming to a stop in front of a Boston Market restaurant in a shopping plaza.

Chandler police and firefighters responded to the truck accident scene to secure the area and put out the burning truck.

The truck driver was able to escape the cab of his semi before it exploded into flames. Chandler Emergency personnel treated him at the scene and then transported him to a local hospital.

The two women in the minivan sustained serious injuries in the truck accident and at least one of them had to be extricated from the vehicle by emergency workers. They were stabilized at the scene and then taken to the hospital. Authorities report that they are in critical condition.

The truck accident and fire left the semi charred on one side and with a huge hole in the driver’s side of the windshield. The minivan was crushed and had considerable damage to the front section.

When the power box was damaged in the truck accident it cut off electricity in the area from Ray and Alma School Road to Interstate 10 and then north to Alma School Road to Knox Road, affecting more than 500 customers. Utility crews would work for several hours and restored power to the neighborhood around 1:00 p.m. Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities shut down the area around the truck accident scene for several hours while officers conducted an investigation and road crews cleared debris from the traffic lanes. A city crew was in charge of cleaning up the spilled diesel fuel. The intersection finally reopened around 5:30 p.m.
No charges have been brought at this time and the truck accident remains under investigation.
