New Concord is located in the east-central part of the state about 70 miles east of Columbus, about 212 miles southeast of Toledo, about 106 miles south of Akron, about 143 miles west of Dayton, about 141 miles south of Cleveland and about 172 miles northeast of Cincinnati.
The 18 wheeler that rolled over was a car hauler. It was driven by Ronald Young, Jr., 41 years old from East Greenville, Pennsylvania. He sustained non-life threatening injuries in the semi truck accident and was taken to Grant Medical Center in Columbus. He was cited by the highway patrol for failure to control his vehicle and for not wearing a seat belt.
Jeff Jadwin, Deputy Director of the Environmental Management Authority (EMA), was on the scene following the accident. He explained that the big rig diver was from out-of-state and that it appears that he was distracted while “messing with his GPS unit” at the time.
Jadwin said that Young veered off the side of the roadway and hit a guardrail then lost control. The tractor trailer continued on for several hundred feet and then flipped over. “He flipped the semi on it’s top. It was a car hauler so he’s got seven cars on top,” said Jadwin.

The EMA was called in because the semi truck was leaking fuel and hazardous liquids. The incident required the EMA’s attention to assist in the cleanup.
The Ohio highway patrol reported that at least 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in the accident.
Lt. Steven Rine, Commander of the Zanesville Post of the State Highway Patrol said that there was a lot of diesel fuel, gasoline, battery acid because it was a truck that was hauling nine cars. They wanted to address the situation as quickly as possible and make sure the hazardous materials were cleaned up.
The scene of the accident was a twisted mess with a tractor trailer, nine cars and a guard rail all tangled up.

Below is a Google Street View of westbound Interstate 70 just west of the New Concord exit where a semi truck carrying 9 vehicles flipped over on Monday. You can see that the rock formations on the slope of the hill are identical to the photo and video above indicating that this is the exact spot where the semi truck accident occurred.
It took the majority of the day to finish the clean up efforts because there were so many vehicles involved. Interstate 70 was closed down for several hours following the accident. It was re-opened later that day.
