Fatal Truck Accident in Kansas Caused by Wrong Way SUV Driver

MULVANE, KS – Four people died when an SUV traveling the wrong way on the Kansas Turnpike/Interstate 35 led to a fatal truck accident early Monday morning. The truck accident happened south of Wichita near Mulvane, in Sumner County, KS. The accident area is in the south central section of the state near the Oklahoma border, 193 miles west of Joplin, Missouri and 165 miles northwest of Tulsa, OK.

After the collision with the SUV, the Dodge van was then slammed into from behind by a southbound tractor trailer truck driven by 37 year old Reginald Jones of Hopkins, South Carolina.

Early Monday morning 39 year old Kyoung Yeaon Chae and her two twin 17 year old daughters and her 9 year old son, all of Wichita, KS, were traveling southbound on the Kansas Turnpike/I-35 in a 2008 Dodge van. At the same time 27 year old Gregory Davis was driving his 1995 Chevrolet the wrong direction in the same lane of the turnpike.

A few minutes earlier Kansas Turnpike officers had received a report of an SUV traveling in the wrong direction, and were on the lookout for the vehicle. Mr. Davis had left a turnpike service station in Belle Plaine and entered the southbound exit ramp even though it was clearly marked with “Wrong Way” signs.

At approximately 4:40 a.m. near the city of Mulvane by mile marker 30, the southbound Dodge van was hit head on by the Chevrolet SUV going the wrong way in the turnpike’s passing lane.

After the collision with the SUV, the Dodge van was then slammed into from behind by a southbound semi tractor trailer truck driven by 37 year old Reginald Jones of Hopkins, South Carolina. The impact of the truck accident caused the 18 wheeler to roll over, ending up on its right side and blocking all lanes of southbound traffic.

The impact also ruptured a gas tank and diesel fuel spilled out onto the roadway. After the multiple crashes the Dodge van and the SUV came to a stop in the passing lane of the turnpike, and the SUV burst into flames.

Local emergency responders rushed to the scene of the truck accident. The driver of the Dodge van and two of her children were killed in the two collisions. One of the 17 year old daughters was treated and stabilized at the scene and then transported to Wesley Medical Center in Wichita. Her condition is listed as serious. The driver of the SUV was also killed in the multiple accidents and subsequent fire.

The truck driver, Mr. Jones, was treated at the scene of the truck accident and then taken to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita. He reportedly suffered non life threatening injuries.

The truck accident scene was littered with debris from the crashed vehicles and the spilled fuel. The 18 wheeler had also lost part of its cargo which was reportedly boxes of bacon.

Kansas Highway Patrol shut down the southbound lanes of the Kansas Turnpike/I-35 while turnpike crews cleared the lanes for traffic and investigators reconstructed the truck accident.

Officers diverted traffic off the turnpike and onto US 81. KHP reopened one southbound lane around 9:45 a.m. Monday morning.

At this time no charges have been brought, and the truck accident remains under investigation.
