One Dead in Multi Semi Truck Accident in Utah

CEDAR CITY, UT – One person is dead and another critically injured after a multi truck accident last Wednesday in Iron County, Utah. It was snowing and visibility was poor when the truck accident happened on Interstate 15 near Cedar City, UT. The area is in the southwest corner of the state, 255 miles south of Salt Lake City and 170 miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Wal-Mart 18 wheeler slammed into the rear of the Kia Spectra, pushing it under the Moss semi truck. The car was crushed and pinned between the two tractor trailer trucks.

Traffic was already moving slowly on I-15 Wednesday due to the heavy snowfall and an accident that had occurred near mile marker 35, north of Pintura, UT.

Shortly after 12:30 p.m., 25 year old Kristen K. Taylor of Salt Lake County was driving her Kia Spectra southbound on I-15 with one male passenger in the car with her. The Moss semi truck in front of Ms. Taylor slowed and came to a stop because of the earlier accident.

Ms. Taylor was able to bring her Kia safely to a stop, however a Wal-Mart tractor trailer truck which was traveling behind her on the highway was unable to stop or to maneuver to avoid an accident.

The Wal-Mart 18 wheeler slammed into the rear of the Kia Spectra, pushing it under the Moss semi truck. The car was crushed and pinned between the two tractor trailer trucks. The collision set off a chain reaction of three or four additional accidents which would end up involving at least 15 vehicles.

Utah Highway Patrol and emergency personnel responded to the scene of the multi truck accident, and attempted to free Ms. Taylor and her passenger.

Once they reached Ms. Taylor EMS found that she had suffered fatal injuries in the collision and could not be saved. Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene of the truck accident.

The male passenger in the Kia was treated and stabilized at the scene before being transported to Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, UT. He sustained critical injuries and at least one report stated he had lost an arm in the truck collision.

Emergency services transported at least three other people to the hospital with minor, but not life threatening injuries.

Utah Highway Patrol shut down the highway in the area around the multi truck accident. Southbound traffic was diverted off the interstate at the Cedar City exit and onto west State Route 56, then south on State Route 18 to St. George.

Highway crews worked for hours to clear the wreckage of the multiple crashes from the roadway. The interstate was closed for most of the afternoon, with some lanes reopening around 5:30 p.m.

No charges or citations have been made at this time. The truck accident remains under investigation.
